This design features the moʻolelo (story) of Hāloa. Hāloa Naka, the first born of Wākea and Hoʻohokulani, was stillborn. From his buried body, watered by the tears of Hoʻohokulani, came the first kalo (taro). The second son of Wākea and Hoʻohokulani was named Hāloa, after the elder son, who became the first Hawaiian.
