    Actions of Aloha

    Actions of Aloha

Actions of Aloha is a charitable business that was founded by DTL Hawai'i and is driven by its mission to activate and amplify aloha in every home. In March 2020, Actions of Aloha was created in response to the pandemic. The founders understood that big and small actions of aloha - rooted in compassion and kindness - had the power to shift mindsets positively, strengthen relationships, and uplift communities. With its origins as a social media challenge, Actions of Aloha garnered support throughout Hawai'i. After receiving plenty of messages ranging from gratitude to interest, the DTL team created a deck of cards that encouraged simple actions of aloha for an individual, a family, a community, and the world. Through their unique card decks and various “tools to aloha,” Actions of Aloha seeks to amplify aloha in every home around the world. A portion of the profits from each of their products is donated to a Hawai'i non-profit organization that embodies and encourages aloha.

    Advance Wildlife Education

    Advance Wildlife Education

Advance Wildlife Education is based in Maui, Hawaiʻi. As a trained wildlife biologist, I was working in the field with the seabird project and realized that people in the community wanted to help the native wildlife, but they could not protect what they did not know existed. With Hawaiʻi being the “extinction capital of the world,” I was inspired to combine my passions for wildlife and art and took the initiative to design and self-publish an extensive series of wildlife educational coloring books, stickers, and temporary tattoos. My 3 native Hawaiian species collection is in English and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. With all of my products, I donate back to help local conservation organizations such as the Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project, Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, and Hawaii Wildlife Center.

David Shepard is the founder of a place-based, mission-driven aloha wear company. His drawings and designs are a further extension of his mission of conservation through aloha ’āina. M.S. Horticulture alumnus of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, his work at Limahuli Garden, Kalaupapa National Park, and Lyon Arboretum led to storytelling. Shepard uses fabric and fashion to tell the story behind the 'why' of aloha ’āina. Each piece is designed and sewn in Hawai’i. They tell stories about our native flora and fauna visually on fabric, literally on tags, and change how those who wear the clothing see themselves and are seen by others. His aloha wear and Hawaiian shirts are conversation starters that bring Hawaii's storied landscapes into timeless yet contemporary clothing. In addition to empowering and giving voice to conservation efforts and kokua throughout Hawai’i, a portion of profits goes back to the organizations featured. With a place-based, mission-driven approach, fashion can become a platform for conservation on these islands with a voice that transcends and touches people into action far beyond this one place.

Honolulu jewelry designer Debby Sato followed her creative bliss and began designing jewelry in 2006. Throughout her life, she’s had a passion for art and the environment. She grew up exploring Hawaiian forests and the ocean. Debby earned her B.A. in environmental studies with an emphasis on botany. She and her late native Hawaiian husband started the original company, Bliss Jewelry. Together, they took many art and jewelry classes throughout the country. Many of his jewelry designs are present in our collection today. His passing inspired her to quit her job as a teacher and follow their true passion and do art full time, and Debby Sato Designs was born. Today, she combines both of her loves. Debby’s designs are inspired by the plants of Hawai`i, the ocean, and the island lifestyle. She is constantly exploring different techniques and developing new visions for her work in metal, ceramics, and graphic design. Our jewelry is made in Hawai'i and or ethically sourced, and the sterling silver used in our jewelry is made with recycled metal. Our sterling silver and gold fill are zero waste. The shells and beach glass we use are collected in Hawai`i. All our shells are never collected "live". A portion of the profits protect native Hawaiian plants and animals. Hawai`i has been referred to as the “endangered species capital of the world”. Due to millions of years of isolation and many different ecosystems, Hawai’iʻs plants and animals have evolved into different species. Due to the impact of humans, many of these endemic species are endangered or have become extinct. Born and raised exploring the beaches and forests of Hawai'i, the 'Āina is dear to our hearts. Because of that, Debby Sato Designs donates $1 or more from every piece of jewelry sold and 25¢ from every other product to organizations that protect native Hawaiian plants, animals, and their ecosystems. In addition, we also donate to organizations that make Hawai’i and the world a better place. The fire in Lāhainā was devastating! My main focus for my donations will be to give back to Lāhainā 'Ohanas affected by the fire. The link in my Instagram Bio provides information on how you can help them. It is important that local 'ohanas remain in Hawai'i and are able to rebuild! I urge you to join me in supporting them and donate whatever you can to help them.

Just as “Flotsam” describes found items washed ashore, Flotsam & Co incorporates found materials into its jewelry, giving new form and life to objects that may otherwise be considered debris and detritus. With a background in fine art and design from The Cooper Union in New York City, Karen uses all of her fine art skills to bring a completely new line of jewelry that marries her love of the Ocean with her passion for design. Starting Flotsam & Co. in 2012, her original jewelry has been featured in countless international publications. Karen spent years perfecting and experimenting with some of the jewelry techniques to showcase her sunrise shells. The 24kt gold electroplating technique is a signature item of Flotsam & Co., as Karen was the first to develop this unparalleled way to set shells and stones in an organic setting. This technique, normally used with precious stones and gems, gives found objects a new life and highlights the beauty in these natural elements.

    Hualalai Estate Coffee

Named after the mountain on which Kona coffee grows, Hualalai (pronounced "who ala lie") Estate Coffee started as a hobby for the founder, Joel Cooperson, in 1996, with just a couple acres in his backyard. As Joel’s understanding of and passion for Kona coffee grew, so did his business. Hualalai Estate Coffee began to increase in popularity, and suddenly the coffee produced on the 2-acre farm could not keep up with the demand. Joel started to research the quality of coffees from other farms. Currently, Hualalai Estate Coffee sources coffee from hundreds of acres of multiple farms. This contributes to the brand being able to create a consistently superb product and not being stuck with mediocre crops from bad years, as some small farms and large publicly-traded companies are forced to do. This situation is a win-win for both parties involved. Hualalai Estate Coffee allows farmers who don't want to spend time marketing their own coffee to focus on growing the best coffee possible. While the Hualalai Estate can maintain superior quality through the processing, roasting, and packaging processes. What results is what they strive for - happy consumers.

Kaleimamo Hawai'i is named after our daughter, and literally means, "the lei made of yellow lehua blossoms." Kaleimamo also refers to all of the keiki (children) or "mamo" everywhere. It is our hope that this business connects families throughout the world like a lei so that we can leave our honua (world) a better place for our children and all generations to come. We are so excited to be able to share all of our designs, stories, passions, and hard work with you! Never in my wildest dreams did I think that we would own a business, much less a cloth diaper business! We are so grateful for your support and aloha. It truly means so much to us.

    Marr Artworks

Marr Artworks was created by husband and wife team Kristopher & Kim Marr in 2013. Drawing on Kris's background in studio art and woodworking, the shop started small, selling wood pens and koa wood rings. Working side by side, they started experimenting with resin and wood, first turning out pens, then necklace pendants and earrings. Believing in repurposing and reusing items, the jewelry pieces are made using wood scraps sourced from other woodworkers who do not use cutoffs or small natural edge bits. These wood pieces that are normally thrown away are perfect for making their one-of-a-kind pendants and earrings. As their purpose for the shop evolved, they expanded their offerings to include home decor. They started slowly, experimenting on wood panels to get a feel of how the resin flowed and blended together. While Kris continued making jewelry, Kim started taking everyday household items like bowls, serving trays, and ceramics and turning them into functional art. Born and raised in Hawaii, they draw inspiration from the abundant beauty around them. Each piece is one of a kind and represents the strong influence the ocean has played in their lives.

This slip-resistant, portable, washable mat provides a safe & comfortable play space that supports the development of your little one while protecting their tummies, bums, hands & knees from the dirty floor. Place Meli Mat, sticky side down, on any hard surface and give your little one the freedom to wiggle and play anywhere safely. The Meli Mat brand is also furbaby-approved and powered by the aloha spirit. They humbly donate a portion of all sales to children in need.

For over 20 years, Nä Mäkua Original Hawaiian Designs has been widely known for its distinctive and unique Hawaiian art. Artists Nelson and Kainoa Makua make up this father-and-son team. They draw from their experiences as kanaka maoli and the stories passed down from küpuna to create their visual images. Over the course of Nelson's career, he never considered starting his own clothing line as he had always used Creative Arts as the screeners for his tees. But, with the encouragement and support from the owners of Creative Arts, Nelson and Kainoa started Na Maku when they presented their new line at the Merrie Monarch Festival in 1999. From apparel to fine art, their images may speak of the beauty of Hawai‘i, or its legends or ‘ölelo no‘eau. Nä Mäkua gives it a visual voice that speaks out to other Hawaiians.

As 4th generation Homesteaders in Kalamaula, we help our agricultural system by creating value-added products for the retail market throughout the pae ʻāina to support our local economy so they can have a continued demand for fresh-grown produce and decrease the demand for imported produce to Hawaii. Naʻike LLC is a diversified business that produces value-added goods wholesale & retails throughout multiple platforms. We distribute goods to 10 stores island-wide, produce our own shoyu chili pepper blend & own vending machines that feature locally sourced pre-packaged items. We only source Molokai-grown chili peppers and process them in a way we do not need to hot bottle or refrigerate them once opened. We are looking to not only expand our distribution of our sauce to outer islands, we are looking to export chili peppers to similar chili pepper water companies. Armed with MEO Core Four Business 'ike & plan, we invested in ourselves. Being the first to bring in snack and drink combination vending machines to Molokai. My mission is to utilize the machines as a tool to educate people on healthier snack options plus provide great customer service. Today I am proud to say 30% of our inventory is healthy options & happily, more than half is purchased or made on Molokai. In 2020 we were able to invest in three new vending machines, which took Molokai a couple of years to learn! Our fully refrigerated vending machines take Samsung, Apple Pay, credit and debit cards & $20 bills. A laser sensor at the bottom of the machine ensures you receive your product. A staple item in all three of our vending machines is our Na'ike Chili Pepper Shoyu Blend. Crafted in small batches, bottled, and labeled by hand, this simple blend of Aloha Shoyu, distilled white vinegar & locally grown Hawaiian Chili Peppers is available in two heats, original & hot. Drizzle it over rice, saimin, fish, stew, lau lau, kalua pig & grilled opihi. Simply ono! You can buy Na'ike Chili Pepper Shoyu in stores on Molokai & Maui, online at naikeskine.com, themakeke.com, and molokaimobilemarket.com. On Molokai? Find other value-added goods on the Sustainable Mobile Market. Signature onos like Coconut Macadamia Nut Chocolate Chip Cookies, Ulu corn chowder, Smoked Salmon Tortilla Melt, Chile Verde, Macadamia Nut Milk Quiche & Whipped Lemonade. * We keep with our mission of supporting Molokai farmers by offering options for dietary limitations or choices. Focusing on this niche for 7-plus years, we are happy to see the movement on Molokai to source locally. We love our farmers & gardeners; they love what they do, and we craft that love in ways to delight your taste buds! Simply ono! We are also wholesale distributors to Molokai stores with Enjoy Snacks Line & Organic Grandpa Joes Cotton Candy along with our Na’ike. This distribution makes the smallest revenue and takes up the most space in our office but helps with public relations. Our most recent passion is to create a successful farm using organic practices to support our business and community and make our main crop Hawaiian chili peppers. We want to create a Chili Pepper Collective from various growers, processes, and exports in addition to growing food for our lahui and foraging for our 26 egg layers. Farming has been by far the most revenue-guzzling, laborious, backbreaking & fulfilling journey in all of our experience. Our vision is to lead by example alongside Molokai businesses.

    Nake'u Awai

Nake'u Awai is a well-respected Hawai'i fashion icon whose first love was, and still is, theater. In the 1960s, even though Nakeʻu had no formal training as a designer, a choreographer in L.A. encouraged him to try costume design, leading him to the fashion world. After working with big names in fashion, Nakeʻu returned home to Oʻahu in the early 1970s, establishing his own fashion line and merging the knowledge he gained with Hawaiian culture. Often referred to as the Grandfather of Hawaiʻi fashion, Nakeʻu was the first Hawaiian designer to create prints using native and indigenous flora as inspiration locally. Through trial and error, determination, and an indomitable creative spirit, Nakeʻu has made his mark on Hawaiʻi’s fashion industry. Today, he is seen as a mentor whose support and encouragement to other local designers, artists, and craftspeople reflects his strong sense of Hawaiʻi.

    Napua'ala

Pikake was what my husband gave me for Prom and my fave. For seven years, my ohana and I lived in Utah. On visits home to Hawaii, I searched for a Pikake-scented product to take back. Disappointing is an understatement. Nothing smelled anything close to Pikake. As a Cosmetologist with a chemistry background, creating a body care line was a dream. When I couldn't find Pikake, a light bulb went off. I created Napua'ala, which literally translates to the scent of a flower. Pikake is my most popular scent among Hawaii residents. When locals and lei makers say I got the Pikake smell right, or when a customer samples a scented card, without hesitation, says, "That's Pikake," that feeling is incredible. Along with Pikake are Plumeria, Coconut Verbena, White Ginger, Lokelani, Gardenia, and a Kane Cologne I call Tama Toa. I made this from memory of a cologne I purchased for my husband in the 80s. I support local businesses whenever possible—purchasing oils, packaging, labels, and professional services here in Hawaii. An opportunity to mentor a new company was a no-brainer. I feel there's an opportunity for all to be successful in Hawaii. The experience was, for the lack of a better word, amazing.

Native Books Inc. was founded in 1990 by Maile Meyer, an avid reader and entrepreneurial spirit. The idea came to her after being asked why she was interested in a book business when "Hawaiians don't read." Over the next ten years, a number of community events found Meyer in the mix with a table of books, mostly published by Bishop Museum Press and the University of Hawai'i Press. Native Books distributed books to booksellers, schools, libraries, and walk-in customers in Kalihi. The motto, getting "good books in good hands," inspired the earliest years of Native Books. The brands' focus was also "mai ke kumu a ka welau" - from the trunk to the tip of the leaf. This is a directive to carry every book in print about every aspect of Hawai'i.

    NOHO HOME by Jalene Kanani

    NOHO HOME by Jalene Kanani

In 2018 Jalene Kanani launched NOHO Home with a line of bedding featuring her distinguished patterns. NOHO HOME is a sophisticated island experience cultivated through artful home decor. Creating a sacred space is the essence of home and what inspired the namesake of the lifestyle brand. In ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), noho means to be, to dwell, or to come from. Inspired by the notions of authenticity and connection, Noho Home encourages the dweller to express their sense of home through pieces that evoke cultural sensibility. With a natural affinity for depth, texture, and organic patterns, Jalene Kanani's interpretation of “tropical” is a welcomed departure from shabby beach chic. Instead, it evokes a sophisticated island aesthetic reminiscent of her upbringing as a native Hawaiian in Hawai'i. As an artist who is naturally attuned to the patterns of her surroundings, Jalene prefers open, freeform creativity to explore the fullness of a focused design before laying it for added depth. In doing so, she approaches each print through a Hawaiian perspective to balance each of the Kū and Hina elements. With dreams of new textiles and product development on the horizon, Jalene’s success in the world of home decor has only just begun.

Aloha! It is truly my pleasure to bring my Hawaiian ocean and reef-inspired jewelry to you, no matter what part of the world you live in! When you wear your pieces from my collection, you will be reminded of the tranquil beauty of our Hawaiian islands. I began making jewelry in 2008. I had been collecting sea glass and shells on Oahu's North Shore and had been using them in jewelry and crafts as a hobby. Later, I became interested in metalwork and learned how to work in Precious Metal Clay and Art Clay, as well as lost wax casting. I incorporated my love for metal and all things Hawai'i into the line of jewelry that you see in my shop. I opened my brick and mortar shop in 2017 after several years of working from my home studio and doing pop-ups. My jewelry studio is on-site, allowing me to be at the shop while I work. If you happen to be on the North Shore of O'ahu, be sure to stop by Nola Studio + Boutique located at 66-935 Kaukonahua Road in Waialua. I use fine silver (99.99% silver), sterling silver, 14k gold, and 14k gold fill. I do not use gold or silver plating. Pearls and stones are sourced from dealers here in Hawaii, and sea glass and shells are found by me. Occasionally, I purchase locally found sea glass or shells from other collectors when my own collection dwindles. My designs are created from eco and people-friendly materials whenever possible Great care is taken to ensure that you will be more than satisfied with your purchase and that it will last many happy years. Aloha, Kaleimae'ole Latronic

We are a small family business operating out of our home in Mānoa, Hawaiʻi. We launched Onepaʻa Hawaiʻi at the end of 2020 as an experiment and means to provide for our family. Today, our little endeavor has grown in ways we never imagined in a short amount of time. Today we are curating a variety of conscious clothing. We owe all we know to those who have come before us. We look forward to doing better every day. One (pronounced oh•neigh) has a mysterious and universal effect on us humans. We draw lines and sink our footprints in it. We build castles and kingdoms upon it. It calls out to us with stories of connection and creation. It can be solid and immovable but may also move with the wind and tides of the season. Ebb and flow. As a global species, sand lies deep in our cultural conscience, and today it is one of the most important solid substances on earth. A story we will save for another time... Together, rock and sand are opposite but binding, a consequence of each other, a result from their counterpart, a shift from their beginnings, a deeper understanding of the other, for perhaps they really are just the same but represent different stages in time. The shifting sands of our future rely on the ancient sands of our birthplace. Each grain stands upon the one before it experiencing the ebb and flow in the NOW based on what happened in the BEFORE. We are forever grateful to those who share the stories of times before us so we may understand the unique sequence of past and present human experiences that will ultimately come to define the future of our island communities. Throughout the last decade, Hamer and Wilson have collaborated with Native Hawaiian teacher and cultural icon Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu on a series of films focused on Pacific Islander lives and voices. The pair's recent work with animator Daniel Sousa uses ancient and modern legends to probe core elements of human nature across place, time, and identities. Qwaves films were an early part of citizen-generated journalism on the internet and have screened and won awards at the Berlin, Toronto, Tribeca, Annecy, Human Rights Watch, and many other film festivals around the world. Their films have also been exhibited at the Smithsonian, British, Bishop, and American Natural History Museums. Teas by Hiwa

    Teas by Hiwa

Teas by Hiwa started as a way for its founders to make homemade goodies for their families. It has since grown into a collaboration of traditional and modern chai products that are made of locally grown spices and flavors for Hawai'i. The company's name, 'Teas by Hiwa,' allows them to convey their story and respect their Kūpuna (or ancestors). They believe they have a kuleana (or responsibility) to perpetuate the benefits of cultivating Hawai'i-grown spices, herbs, and roots to transcend conventional medicinal use. This is achieved by integrating traditional Hawaiian flavors throughout their modern products to soften the intimidating yet approachable bridge between what was then to what is now. Teas by Hiwa celebrated Hawai'i's diversely grown crops by striving to normalize the use of nīoi (Hawaiian chili pepper), ‘olena (turmeric), niu (coconut), cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, The brand's instant chai mixes are blended in small batches using precise amounts of earthly favorites as a way to reconnect people to the place. It is Teas by Hiwa's mission to share their connection of who they are and where they are from through instant chai.

Their designs mirror the various seasons their family has experienced over the past 18 years and how their faith has helped them to persevere. It is the brand's belief that there is always something that everyone can be truly blessed about in any and every season. Big Island Moonbow Farms is a small-scale beekeeping venture located on Hawai'i Island. Inspired by the plight of the honeybee in Hawai'i and worldwide, they have been caring for honeybees in an organic fashion since 2011. While their primary focus is the health and well-being of their bees, Big Island Moonbow Farms' diverse apiary locations allow them to capture several of the unique nectar sources their island has to offer. Pairing their immense passion and the combined efforts of their family and bees, the farm is pleased to provide Wai Meli - an array of small-harvest, local, raw honey. The Wai Meli team believes that beekeeping is a synthesis of many elements, including farming, biology, and art. There are many variables involved in the nectar selection and foraging availability; location, weather patterns, honeybee health, and hive management all play important roles in the production of honey. Each harvest is seasonable and determined by the preferences of the honeybees. Wai Meli's honey is unheated to maintain nutritive value and true character. It is the brand's hope that customers enjoy Wai Meli as much as the team enjoys it!
