Upon unifying Hawaiʻi, King Kamehameha was called Kaʻiwakīloumoku, the ʻiwa that hooks the islands. The ʻIwa is known for being a master thief, able to snatch fish from smaller birds like Kamehameha, fought fierce battles, and took the Hawaiian Islands from other chiefs.

The ʻIwa is also known for its ability to fly great distances. It is frequently mentioned in Hawaiian moʻolelo (stories) and ʻōlelo noʻeau (proverbs). The ʻIwa is rarely seen. When it is seen in the Hawaiian Islands, a storm is coming.
